What we do
BETTER LIFE OPTIONS
PRERANA’s flagship Better Life Options Programme was initiated in 1988. The project focused on empowering girls with awareness, information and skills that would enable them to access various services and explore better life options.
District Resource Centre
PRERANA has two DRCs in the New Delhi and Central Delhi districts. The New Delhi DRC began functioning from February 2009 and the Central Delhi DRC from December 2008.
Prerana offers its programme expertise to other NGOs. We help them develop and implement their projects and provide evaluation and monitoring services.
Development of IEC Material
Prerana develops training manuals, field-guides, peer-educator resources, evaluation and monitoring worksheets.
PRERANA, meaning inspirations, has been an apt name if one looks back at its genesis and eventful journey! Dreamed and conceptualized by a few alumni of the Delhi School of Social Work with no means or resources, PRERANA has covered miles since its inception in 1975, and is one of the pioneer non-governmental organizations (NGO) of India. Overcoming all challenges and constraints, PRERANA is now known for its multi-sector expertise and its governance practices, which are based on the principles of transparency and accountability.
Training and capacity building of NGOs
PRERANA started work with the Integrated Community-based Health Project in one peri-urban low-cost area inhabited by poor migrant communities. Today, PRERANA works directly in six villages (peri-urban) in South Delhi, reaching out to about two hundred thousand families and touching lives of approximately 0.15 million people. PRERANA has trained hundreds of NGOs who work on Reproductive and Child Health, Adolescent health and HIV/AIDS.
Adolescent issues and reproductive and child health
Services under the integrated project include field based interventions with a focus on Reproductive and Child Health, antenatal and postnatal care, early childhood care and interventions, distribution of non-clinical family planning services; community based training and capacity building and advocacy for utilization of services for children’s and women’s health. Prerana also works on HIV/AIDS awareness and provides counseling and training expertise.
Development of IEC material on Maternal and Child health
Prerana has developed IEC material for its own work -- we had to, because when we started, there were no available resources appropriate for use in India. Our vast collection of resource material is available for use. We also develop customised IEC material.

Rakhi is a Hindu festival during which men promise their sisters that they will take care of her and protect her from harm.
